Mass Communication

Nature of Work

Mass Communication involves communication of information and ideas to and on behalf of others, using various media such as newspapers, magazines, posters, websites, and commercials on TV. The scope in this field is increasing especially with the surfeit of delivery channels. The area of mass communication includes journalism, advertising, and public relations.

Journalism is the act of communicating information through the process of gathering, writing, editing, and presenting events to create awareness among the public. Journalism is broadly divided into two categories - Print and Electronic. Journalism in the print media consists of newspapers, journals, magazines, digests, and news agencies. On the other hand, journalism through the electronic medium consists of television, radio, and the internet.

Advertising is all about turning the attention of a target group towards a company and building brands. As one of the processes of mass communication, ads are the basis of marketing.

Public relations can be best summed up as an image building exercise that can apply to anything from companies and products, to people, projects, or ideas. Its main components are social contact and communication. It is perhaps for these reasons that public relations is perceived as a glamorous and alluring career.

There are not too many institutes which offer courses in advertising or public relations at the graduation level. Most courses require a basic graduation degree. However, it is possible to pursue courses in journalism at the graduation level.

The number of periodicals and magazines are growing everyday. There is a trend towards growing specializations of publications within specific domains. The electronic media too has grown by leaps and bounds. In the post WTC scenario, dissemination of information via electronic communication has assumed a new level of increased importance.
